Performance Rights:

Do I need a performing licence for Bugsy Malone?

Yes. All of our musicals are protected under Copyright law, therefore in order to produce one you must obtain a performing licence which grants you the right to perform the show. Faber Music licence the shows on the writers’ behalf to ensure that each performance adheres to the authors’ intentions.

How do I apply for a performing licence?

How much will a performing licence cost?

For private, school performances, royalties are calculated at £125 per performance plus VAT.

For amateur groups and public, school performances, royalties are calculated at 16% of the gross box office receipts, with a guaranteed minimum charge of £125 per performance plus VAT.

Is my performance public or private?

All amateur productions are public performances. For schools a public performance is advertised locally and is open to the wider public. A private performance is only given to friends and family.

How far in advance of my performance do I have to apply for a licence?

You should only start rehearsing once we have received a signed copy of your licence. Therefore we advise that you apply at least a month in advance of your planned first rehearsal date.

Can I cut or change the show in any way?

Any changes require approval from the show’s creators. Therefore, if you wish to make any changes you should inform us as early as possible during your application process.

Can I perform to a backing track?

No. Bugsy Malone can only be performed with live music.

Hire:

Can I order a perusal score?

Yes, to order a perusal score for Bugsy Malone, call our Hire Team on +44 (0)1279 828907/8, or email hire@fabermusic.com.

What hire materials are available?

A full set of orchestral parts (recommended ability - grade 5) is available at a hire fee of £120 per set, per calendar month.

Piano/Vocal scores are available at a hire fee of £5 per copy, per calendar month, with a minimum charge of £45 (3 copies for 3 months).

Can I hire the script from you?

Playscripts are not available for hire. These are commercially available and can be purchased here.

Why is there no overture in my piano/vocal score?

Unfortunately there is no piano reduction of the overture. If you require an overture, we suggest that you play the opening number, ‘Bugsy Malone’, as an instrumental.

Why is there no incidental (entrance and exit) music in my score?

There is no incidental music in Bugsy Malone. If you require incidental music we suggest that you play the last few bars of the previous song.

I have the Bugsy Malone vocal selection; can I use this for performance?

No. As the vocal selection only includes four songs, you will need to hire the full piano/vocal or orchestral set for your performances.

Do I have to hire an orchestral set?

While Bugsy Malone must only be performed with live music, the orchestral set is optional. You may choose to perform with piano accompaniment only.

When will I receive my hire materials?

Providing that you return your signed licence to us in time, we aim to get the hire materials to you on the date you request on your initial application form.

What are your postage and packaging charges?

For UK postage and packaging we charge £15 per despatch. If you require hire delivery to a different country, this fee may differ and will be outlined on your initial quote.

How do I return our hire materials?

We ask that you post your materials within two weeks of your final performance to our hire library:

Will I be charged VAT for my hire materials?

You will not be charegd VAT on hire materials.

Schools:

Is my school’s performance public or private?

A public performance is advertised locally and is open to the wider public. A private performance is only given to friends and family.

If my performance is private, do I still need to pay a performance fee?

Yes. You will still need to pay a performance fee and hire fees for the materials you require.

Are there any geographical performance restrictions?

If you are performing publically, we will check to see if any other performances of Bugsy Malone are happening within a 30 mile radius, and 30 days either side of your production. If this occurs, we have to seek permission from the company who applied first for your performance to go ahead.

Societies:

What percentage of box office will I have to pay?

Video Licenses:

Can I video my performance?

Yes, however you will have to apply for a separate video licence.

How do I apply for a video licence?

You will be asked on the application form if you would like a video licence. We will then generate a separate video licence and send it to you alongside your performance licence. You must sign and return it to us prior to performance.

How much is a video licence?

We charge £50 for a video licence.

How many copies of the video can I make?

A video licence allows you to make up to 50 copies of the video for private use only, which must either be given away or sold at cost price only.

Copying Scripts:

Can I make copies of the scores/script?

No. Reproducing a copyrighted work by any means without prior permission is illegal. Copyright exists to protect the authors’ work and ensure their livelihood.

Can I make an enlarged copy of the score/script?

If you require an enlarged copy of the score/script for a stage manager or a partially sighted member of your cast/crew please contact us with the full details. This will be approved on a case by case basis.

Payment:

When do I have to pay?

You will receive an invoice after your final performance. Once you have received the invoice you have 30 days to make your payment.

Will we get a refund if we choose to cancel our production?

We have the right to charge a cancellation fee of £60 (plus VAT) if the licence has been issued. In the event that materials have already been sent we will charge the appropriate hire fees.
